Neighborhood Watch Report

Chairperson

NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH REPORT

Mission Statement: Neighborhood Watch is simply your block uniting to be on the “look out” for suspicious activity and reporting it to the Sheriff’s Office.  This can save your lives and protect your property.

TIP: Always call 911 from a land line if possible, this way your location automatically shows up in the 911 system.

Functions of Neighborhood Watch

•    Teaches residents techniques to reduce the risk of being a victim of crime at home or in public.
•    Trains residents on the importance of recognizing suspicious activities and how to report them.
•    Teaches residents how to make their homes more secure and properly ID their property.
•    Enables neighbors to get to know each other and their routines so that any “out of place” activity can be reported.
The Benefits of Neighborhood Watch
•    Instills a greater sense of security and reduces the fear of crime in our neighborhood.
•    Allows neighbors to get to know each other.  Having a good relationship with your neighbors can dramatically impact overall safety and security of your home.
•    A few pointers: Good Neighbors look out for each other by report suspicious activities to proper authorities when you are away.
•    Do small tasks for each other to build trust such as pick up your newspaper and mail while you are away and return all favors and communicate often.

As a retired Commander of the Community Relations/Crime Prevention Unit of the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office (for 27 years)

I recommend that people leave their outside lights on at night.  Burglars and thieves do not want to be seen.  IT COSTS VERY LITTLE ELECTRICITY TO LEAVE A LIGHT ON IN THE FRONT AND THE BACK OF YOUR HOUSE FROM DUSK TO DAWN—SET THEM ON A TIMER.  At least put the porch light on all night.  Drive through Old Bissonet and New Bissonet at 9 p.m. and see how dark it is.  People with shrubbery around their houses will have extra darkness because the shrubbery conceals the light from the street lights.

Remember - Crime and Beautification are definitely correlated. A neighborhood that is not well kept could invite unscrupulous visitors as per the National Crime Prevention Council. When walking in the neighborhood, please pick up litter along the way.
